Building Australia's most recognised broadcast environments through innovation, craftsmanship, and a deep understanding of television production.
Canyon-kernel was founded in 2008 by a team of broadcast engineers and set designers who shared a common frustration: television studios in Australia often relied on overseas suppliers who lacked understanding of local production requirements and time zone challenges.
We established our workshop in Sydney's Pyrmont precinct, positioning ourselves at the heart of Australia's media industry. From those early days building sets for regional news programmes, we expanded our capabilities to serve national broadcasters, streaming platforms, and corporate clients across the country.
Our growth reflects the evolution of Australian television itself. As broadcasts moved from standard definition to high definition and now to 4K and beyond, our design philosophy adapted accordingly. Materials that looked flawless on older cameras required replacement with surfaces that withstand the scrutiny of modern imaging technology.
Today, our team includes scenic artists, structural engineers, lighting specialists, and digital integration experts. This multidisciplinary approach means we handle complete projects internally, maintaining quality control from initial concept through final installation.
Every television environment presents unique challenges. Morning programmes require sets that photograph well under changing daylight conditions streaming through windows. News studios must accommodate rapid reconfiguration for breaking coverage. Entertainment stages need areas where audiences can gather without obstructing camera movements.
We begin each engagement with comprehensive discovery sessions. Our designers visit your facility, review existing workflows, and interview key stakeholders from producers to camera operators. This research phase often reveals opportunities that clients had not initially considered.
Following discovery, we develop detailed 3D renderings that simulate your set under actual studio lighting conditions. Clients can virtually walk through their future environment before we fabricate a single component. Revisions at this stage cost time rather than materials.
Television remains a remarkably powerful medium for connecting with audiences. Whether delivering critical news updates, entertaining millions during prime time, or communicating corporate messages to dispersed teams, the environment from which content originates shapes how viewers receive it.
Beautiful sets that fail to support production workflows create ongoing problems. We prioritise designs that look exceptional while enabling efficient broadcast operations.
Studio environments endure significant wear. We select materials that maintain their appearance under daily use and withstand the demands of busy production schedules.
Modern studios rely on LED screens, automated lighting, and sophisticated control systems. Our designs accommodate current technology while anticipating future upgrades.
The best results emerge from genuine partnership with our clients. We value input from everyone who will use the spaces we create.
Our 2,400 square metre facility in Pyrmont houses complete fabrication capabilities. CNC routers produce precise scenic elements. Paint booths allow controlled application of specialty finishes. Assembly areas permit full set mockups before transport to installation sites.
This vertical integration distinguishes us from design firms that subcontract construction. When designers and builders work under the same roof, communication improves and quality increases. Our teams iterate together, solving problems as they emerge rather than after components reach your facility.
